上の英文で、間違いを直せの解答が「among ⇒ the 」なのはどうしてですか？

という質問がありましたので、ここで解答しておきます。

まず、カンマからカンマまでの「 if not more diligent than」という部分は

「（他の生徒みんな）より勤勉とまでは言えないが」という意味の挿入なので、いったん（　）に括ってみます。

すると、Tom is considered to be as diligent as among other students in his class.

となりますね。

ここで、次の例文を考えてみます。

Tom is as diligent as the other studens in his class.

トムは、クラスのどの生徒と比べても、同じくらいは勤勉だ

⇒トムより勤勉な生徒はクラスにいない

この文章で分かるように、as diligent as の後ろには、比べるべき対象の名詞がこないといけませんね。

Tom is as diligent as Mary.

これもas の後ろには比較対象の名詞が来ていますよね。

元の文では、as の後ろに「among the ～」という副詞句がきてしまっていますね。だからamong を the に直すことになるのですね。
